TARRAFAL DE MONTE TRIGO

Hiking from Tarrafal to Monte Trigo - Santo Antão

Hiking from Tarrafal to Monte Trigo

Tarrafal and Monte Trigo are two neighboring fishing villages that are located at the base of Topo de Coroa, the highest peak on the island of Santo Antão measuring around 1979 meters in height.

Monte Trigo is a remote and picturesque fishing village on the southwest coast of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. Nestled between steep mountains and the vast Atlantic Ocean, it is one of the most isolated villages on the island, with only two ways to get there: by walking along a coastal trail, about 4 hours depending on the hiker, or by sea, about 45 minutes by fishing boat. Both ways to get to Monte Trigo are breathtaking.

The contrast between the sea and the mountains makes the place stunning, welcoming and incredibly peaceful.

From the beginning of the hike, you will have a scenery that contrasts volcanic rock walls, steep slopes, and the wild Atlantic down below, crashing forcefully against the rocks. Since it is a trail carved amid this rugged terrain, it is sometimes narrow and uneven, requiring caution with your footing and physical endurance. Along the way, you will encounter landscapes of rock formations that look like natural sculptures, as well as exposed sections where vertigo may challenge those who are less accustomed. During the hike, you may see some seabirds, goats, or even locals making the journey on foot, as this trail is part of their routines.
As it is an area where the main activity is fishing, it is almost mandatory not to leave there without tasting fresh fish, lobsters and other seafood. Likewise, it is almost impossible not to take a dip in the crystal clear waters of Monte Trigo beach.
On the way back to Tarrafal, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a magnificent and safe boat trip with local fishermen.
The tour offers unique views of the coast, the contrast of colors of the sea and the mountains and, if you are lucky, the possibility of seeing dolphins.
